This is not a metaphor for the kind of horror of the physical being, as is often explored by Cronenberg. They're literally various kinds of delicious meat, albeit conscious and capable of feeling pain when consumed. Theo is a cheese Kransky. Ben is a Wagyu Porterhouse cut. Ben sees a parallel with the short story “They're Made out of Meat” by Terry Bisson. Theo conflates this with “Metamorphosis” by Franz Kafka, but dismisses both comparisons. Andrew is a dry rubbed rack of beef ribs, and immediately derails the intro into an extended discussion about the comparison between various cuts of beef ribs in Australia and the US. Andrew then accuses Theo of popping the pockets of cheese on his sausage skin like zits.
